Requirements

While obligations specify who must do what to meet the requirements (e.g. manufacturers must test products, prepare documents and provide accessible information), the requirements define how to achieve legal compliance for each type of product or service. In particular, the four principles of digital accessibility must be respected:

  • Perceptibility: information must be perceptible through multiple sensory channels.
  • Operability: products and services must be usable by users with various limitations.
  • Comprehensibility: information and operation must be understandable.
  • Robustness: products must be compatible with assistive technologies.

Examples of these requirements:

  • the product shall avoid triggering photosensitive seizures.
  • instructions for use must be made available via more than one sensory channel.
  • digital files of e-books must not prevent assistive technology from operating properly.

The requirements for products and services covered by the law are detailed in Annex I of the Directive.
